Jesus: The Greatest Friend

sun. love. hands. heart shape.

It has been said time and time again “It’s not about what you know, it’s about WHO you know”. People spend their entire lives trying to network and fit in and establish contacts with higher positions in society than themselves, all in the hopes of success. For many, life is about rubbing shoulders with people of power. (celebrities, politicians, etc.) Many people want to make friends with people who will propel them along in life. Proverbs 19:6 tells us “Many seek the favor of a generous man, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.” Everyone wants to be friends with someone that they can gain something from.

Most people, sadly, are seeking friendship in the wrong places. Most people are ignoring the best friend of them all: Jesus. We can never emphasize enough the fact that Jesus Christ is Lord. He is king! However, we should also remember to emphasize that He is our friend. The creator of this universe, who holds the breath of every living creature in His hands, wants to be your friend. He knows all the things you struggle with, the heartaches you have endured, your goals and aspirations, and He wants to walk by your side as you navigate life.

I care about people out there who are hurting, and my heart breaks for them more than anyone will ever understand. I want to help others. I want to hear their stories and identify the exact moment where things went wrong for them. I want to fix their brokenness and set them on their feet and walk them down a more successful path. I want to take away their hurt. Honestly, I can want all those things, but I do not have the capacity to help everyone. However, Jesus can! He is the greatest friend that anyone could ask for.

All throughout history people have died for their king, and yet the king of kings died for us. Most people will not give you the time of day in this world unless you have something to offer them, that’s why true friendships are so precious. We must understand that we don’t actually have anything to offer God, and yet He wants to be our friend for the sole purpose of being our friend.

The wicked and evil Judas Iscariot arrived to betray Jesus in a time of agony. Jesus was praying to the Father, and sweating terribly because of how anxious He was for the suffering He was about to endure. Judas arrived not to comfort Jesus in His darkest hour, but he came with men ready to capture Jesus and torture Him to death. And yet, at this very moment, Jesus being fully aware of this betrayal, looks at Judas in the eyes and calls him “friend”. That is true friendship. John 15:13 says “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

God has infinite power, lacks nothing, is perfect in every way, and yet wants to be your friend. He died for you so that you could have a relationship with Him. Are you a friend of God? The first step is getting saved, accepting Christ as your savior today, if you have not done so. If you have done that already that is great! The next step is to invest in your relationship with God. Love Jesus back, and be a friend to Him as He is to you. He is always there for you, but He is not going to force you to be His friend. Seek to draw close to Him, and He will draw close to you.
